| | Snow Leopard Cub Born at Cape May County Zoo
Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel announced the birth of a Snow Leopard at the Cape May County Zoo. The male cub was born on May 12, 2011 to 8 year-old mom 'Himani' and 11 year-old dad 'Vijay'. Last year, they were the proud parents of two Snow Leopard cubs born on May 10, 2010. With the new cub, the Zoo is now home to five Snow Leopards. There were fifteen Snow Leopards born in seven institutions in 2010 and just two so far in 2011. |
Zoo Hosts Summer Visitor  The Cape May County Zoo has welcomed a new visitor to Cape May County for the summer season. The zoo will be home to an Albino American Alligator until the middle of September. There are only fifty known Albino American Alligators in the World! The alligator which is on loan from the St. Augustine Alligator Farm is on exhibit in the zoo's Reptile House. More than 250 species and over 500 animals call the Cape May County Zoo home. "Choose Your Cover Event" Offers Sun Safe Precautions and Free Skin Cancer Screenings Whether you're basking on one of Cape May County's beautiful beaches this summer, working in the garden, going for a walk or running errands, taking a few sun smart precautions could save your life. "Choose Your Cover", a free state-wide skin cancer screening, awareness and educational initiative, will once again take to the beaches this summer with the message of prevention. "Choose Your Cover" will offer free skin cancer screenings in Cape May County on Saturday, July 16th at Beach Patrol Headquarters, Beach Avenue and Grant Street in the City of Cape May from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dr. Coyle S. Connolly, Board Certified Dermatologist and members of his staff will be available to the public, on a first come first serve basis, offering free skin cancer screenings. Pre-registration for the event is not required. In addition to the skin cancer screenings by volunteer healthcare professionals, participants receive free sunscreen and a wealth of information about precautions to protect their skin. Cape May County 4-H Fair and BBQ July 21, 22 and 23

The 4-H Fair and Chicken BBQ has been an annual family favorite in Cape May County for 66 years and is one of the best family values of the summer. The celebration, will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 21, 22 and 23 at the 4-H Fairgrounds in Cape May Court House. The fair features 4-H project displays, small animal and livestock shows and exhibits, live entertainment, horse shows, commercial exhibitors, a pet show, amusement rides, games, great food and interesting and informative demonstrations. There is no admission fee to the fair and the shows, exhibits and parking are free! Wizard's Festival of Fun Amusements is always a favorite with the kids, featuring clean and safe rides for the whole family.  The fair's traditional, tasty barbecue chicken dinner will be served all three evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. by the Cape May County Board of Agriculture. Always a crowd favorite, Friday's menu adds a choice of delicious filet of flounder or chicken. Barbecue diners will enjoy live entertainment on the main fair stage throughout the evening. The cost of the dinner is $11 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. The public hours for the fair are noon to 9 p.m. General admission to the fair is FREE, as is public parking and shuttle service to the 4-H fairgrounds on comfortable Cape May County Fare Free buses. The official fair parking area is located at the Cape May County Technical High School, exit 11 off the east side of the Garden State Parkway. "Jail - It's Not for Me!" Sheriff Gary Schaffer announced the start of a new program for juvenile offenders. The program aims to educate the young offender, ages 13 to 17, about wrong choices, consequences and harsh experiences of a correctional setting. The "Jail- It's Not for Me!" program is designed to take referrals from the juvenile courts, police agencies using station house adjustments and diversion programs, as well as, school resource officers. The goals of the program are: · Prevent the young person from becoming a statistic in the Correctional System · Life changing experience to deter juveniles from criminal and gang activity · Educate the young person about wrong choices, consequences and harsh experiences of a correctional center setting · Educate about negative effects of gang affiliation, alcohol abuse, drug abuse and addiction · Enable Correctional Center and Sheriff's Officers to utilize their skills in a program designed to give back to the community · Track and dramatically reduce recidivism in the correctional system Sheriff Gary Schaffer said, "This is a cost effective program that offers an option to young offenders in hopes of educating them about the harsh realities and consequences of their actions." The program is set to begin in July 2011. |
"We Check For 21" In Cape May County  Nearly six hundred people attended the "We Check For 21" Program kick-off officially starting the annual underage drinking awareness campaign in Cape May County. A record number attended the two training and information sessions on June 23rd hosted by the Board of Chosen Freeholders. This year marks the 19th anniversary of the program that originated in Cape May County in 1993 and has since been implemented statewide. The initiative that coined the slogan "If you're too young to buy, don't even try" originally had forty businesses involved. Now, more than one hundred businesses participate. The "We Check for 21" campaign educates persons 16-20 years old about underage drinking which is punishable by a fine of no less than $500 and loss of driver's license for a minimum of 6 months. A promotional campaign which includes road signs, flyers and radio and television commercials is conducted all summer long spreading the word that "We Check For 21" is enforced in Cape May County. |
Crest Haven "Seniors" Go To The Prom Crest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center held its sixth annual "Senior" Prom on June 16th. Approximately 65 women and 16 men attended this special event that began with photographs in the lobby of the Center. A formal dinner was served by the Crest Haven kitchen staff. Following dinner, there was music, dancing and fun for all. For some residents this is their only senior prom so the Recreation Department at Crest Haven reaches out to various organizations and businesses in the area for donations of prom gowns, tuxedos and boutonnières. Freeholder Gerald Thornton said, "The event is extraordinary because so many of the Crest Haven staff are involved, making it a special occasion for the residents. It brings everyone together for one common cause, to make this a day to remember for the residents at Crest Haven. This year's prom, again, was the most talked about evening of the year." |
Freeholders Honor Cape May County Teacher Of The Year
The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored Kelley Hogg, a teacher in the Middle Township School District, for being named the 2011-2012 Cape May County Teacher of the Year. Hogg has been an English teacher for 13 years and currently teaches freshmen and seniors at Middle Township High School. Freeholder M. Susan Sheppard said, "It is obvious Kelley is one of those 'special teachers'! She is a positive role model for her students and the community." Hogg will now compete in the state-level Teacher of the Year Program. |
Cape May County Advisory Commission on the Status of Women Presents Scholarship Freeholder M. Susan Sheppard and the Cape May County Advisory Commission on the Status of Women presented a $1,000 scholarship to Lower Cape Regional High School Graduate Amy Strolle on June 28, 2011. |

Police Academy Honors Freeholder Ralph E. Sheets, Jr. Public Safety Training Center Director Anthony P. Saduk and Cape May County Sheriff Gary G. Schaffer honored Cape May County Public Safety Director Freeholder Ralph E. Sheets, Jr. for his outstanding lifetime contributions to the police profession, the training of its officers and his key role in founding, maintaining and making the Cape May County Police Academy one of the finest Police Training Facilities in the state of New Jersey. |
37th Annual Senior Art Show Cape May County's 37th Senior Art Show took place on June 8, 2011.
This year over one hundred ten original works of art were submitted by sixty Cape May County residents over the age of 60 in the following categories: Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, Pastel, Drawing, Sculpture, Photography, Mixed Media, and Craft. |
Fare Free Drivers Win State Competition 
Freeholder Vice-Director Leonard Desiderio announced that Cape May County Fare Free Transportation drivers are continuing their winning ways and setting records in the process. Lower Township's Dave Smith became the only five time consecutive champion in the 27 year history of the state's roadeo event. Also, Cape May's Brian Fitzpatrick placed second and Lower Township's Adele Jones, a past national contestant, placed fourth. |
Animal Shelter & Adoption Center Celebrates 7th Birthday  Freeholder Vice-Director Leonard Desiderio and Sheriff Gary Schaffer invite the residents of Cape May County to join them and Shelter staff in celebrating the seventh birthday of the Cape May County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center. The week-long celebration, to commemorate the Shelter's opening in July of 2004, includes reduced adoption fees, free services and tours of the facility. On Friday, July 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. there will be an open house complete with refreshments and a tour of the facility. Also, from July 15th through July 21st, all adoption fees will be cut in half. Adoption fees include spay/neuter procedures, microchipping, vaccinations and a free vet visit. The Cape May County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center is located at 110 Shelter Road in the Crest Haven Complex (exit 11 off the Garden State Parkway). Emergency Preparedness Conference  In recognition of September as National Preparedness Month, Cape May County will hold an Emergency Preparedness Conference at the County Administration Building. National Preparedness month is a good time to remind residents and visitors how important it is to be prepared for an emergency. This is the sixth year that the County will host a Preparedness Conference to bring attention to being prepared in all emergency situations. The free conference, which will be open to the public, will provide elected officials, emergency responders and the public with updated information on preparedness efforts in place in the State of New Jersey and the County.
