County Offers New Health Screening Program for Seniors!
Release Date: July 07, 2011

Cape May Court House – Freeholder Gerald Thornton announced today that the Cape May County Department of Health is launching a new Senior Health Screening Program to address the needs of the County’s older adult population. Thornton said, “Cape May County is home to the highest per capita population of adults sixty years of age and over in the State.”   2010 census data shows that approximately 29% of the County’s population is sixty years of age and over.
The Senior Health Screening Program is designed to provide initial screening for diabetes, anemia, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, memory deficit, nutritional status, medication review, balance/fall risk assessment, general health and well being (including emotional health and adult intimacy), and vaccination status. Health education and program referrals are also a vital part of the program.
The Senior Health Screening Program was developed, not to take the place of the primary healthcare provider, but to complement the provider by offering screenings that may not be feasible as part of the provider’s day-to-day schedule. The primary care provider and the participant will receive a copy of all reports generated through the screening program.
Health Officer Kevin Thomas added, “The Department has identified critical health concerns that are sometimes overlooked and that can be collectively evaluated using a team approach. These health issues form the basis of the screening program.”  If health risk factors are identified through the screening program, recommendations will be made for physical therapy and/or further screening by the patient’s healthcare provider.
Thornton concluded, “As an older adult myself, I am pleased that the Department of Health is now providing these important services for our seniors. Through this no-cost program, signs and symptoms of chronic disease can be identified early, which will result in more timely care and follow-up.”
The Senior Health Screening Program has been piloted in several senior centers in Cape May County and will be opened to all older adult residents (sixty years and older) in September.
