Cape May Court House - Sheriff Gary Schaffer today announced that the Cape May County Correctional Center has implemented a new Commissary accounting system that allows someone to deposit money into an inmate’s account utilizing different methods of payment. Keefe Commissary Network, based in St. Louis, Missouri, is providing this service to the Cape May County Correctional Center.
Deposits can be made daily, weekly or monthly with a $300 per day/per inmate account limit. Any balance remaining on the inmate’s commissary account at the time the inmate is released will be given to the inmate in the form of a prepaid debit card. This card can be used at ATM’s for cash withdrawal and/or any PIN-based and signature required purchases once activated.
“This new system has many benefits. First our officers will not be recording, handling and transferring cash. This will free up officers’ time for other duties. Also, it will now afford us a system for tracking who is making deposits for inmates, cutting down on potential money laundering and gang connections. With potentially more money in inmates commissary accounts, that has been seen in other jurisdictions where this system is used, the county is entitled to take up to 50% to pay for the cost of inmate medical, dental and other expenses which will be a big savings for taxpayers. Finally, it will make it easier for family and friends of the inmates to make deposits into their accounts,” said Sheriff Schaffer.
In order to make a deposit you must know the inmate’s individual id number or his name. There are three methods to deposit money into an inmate’s commissary account:
1. Online Website: Go to the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office Website at www.cmcsheriff.net and use the link provided under the Correctional/Commissary page. Follow the instructions provided.
2. Call Center: - Call toll free number at 1-866-345-1884 and use any credit/debit card that has the Master Card or Visa Logo.
3. Automatic Payment Processing Machine: An ATM type machine is located at the Correctional Center that can accept payments using Master Card, Visa or cash.
According to Sheriff Schaffer, “At this time money can be put into inmates accounts by phone, on line or using the ATM in the lobby of the Correctional Center. As of August 15th we will no longer be accepting money orders for commissary. This new system will benefit everyone by making it easier for deposits to be made, offer a better tracking of monies received, free up officers’ time for other important duties and enable us to offset some of the expenses that our taxpayers have to fund for these inmates.”
