Cape May Court House – The Bald Eagle Habitat at the Cape May County Zoo, dedicated to veterans, was re-opened to the public on June 3, 2010. The popular Bald Eagle Habitat, destroyed during the February snowstorm, was rebuilt with donations from the public. Freeholder Director Dan Beyel said, “Since the Bald Eagle is a symbol of freedom and strength, the County decided to dedicate the Habitat to all veterans.”
The new Bald Eagle Habitat, costing approximately $40,000, is built on the footprint of old exhibit (20'X80'), but is substantially higher - it is now 22' high, giving the Eagles flight space. The Habitat reflects that of a South Jersey marsh with a mural and landscape to match. There is a flowing stream water feature in the center with landscaping and a new holding area for the eagles.
Additionally, the Cape May County Zoo Society donated a large bronze sculpture of a flying eagle on a granite base for the Veterans Memorial which is part of the new exhibit.
Donafaye H. Burke who made a generous contribution in the memory of her husband Charles A Burke, a World War II Navy veteran, unveiled the statue dedicating the exhibit to veterans. In the future, a Memorial Wall will be constructed at the site for donors.
Director Beyel added, “This project at the Cape May County Zoo is an excellent example of how the public, private sector and county government work together to complete a task and the end result is a home worthy of our Bald Eagles.”
