Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel announced that the Cape May County Zoo has a new addition. The Cape May County Zoo welcomed a new Muntjac named ‘Kirby’ this spring. Kirby transferred to the Cape May County Zoo from Riverside Zoo in Scottsbluff, Nebraska for breeding purposes.
The Reeves Muntjac, known as a barking deer due to the deep bark like sounds they make, can be found in the wild in the forests in Southern China and Taiwan. The captive lifespan of the Muntjac is approximately ten years. The Muntjac, an Herbivore, can weigh as much as thirty pounds. Being primarily crepuscular, these animals are mostly active from dawn and dusk.
Visit the Muntjac along with the more than 250 species and over 500 animals that call the Cape May County Free Zoo home. The Zoo, located at 707 Route 9 North in Cape May Court House, is currently open from 10 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. The Zoo is open, weather permitting, 364 days a year – closed on Christmas Day.
