Cape May Court House - Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer today announced that due to the success of the program throughout the month of June the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center will now offer microchipping of dogs and cats to Cape May County residents on a regular basis.
Sheriff Schaffer said, “The response by residents in June demonstrates to me that this is a service that is needed. Therefore, microchipping is now another service the Cape May County Animal Shelter is providing for County residents.”
Microchipping cats and dogs facilitates reuniting pets with owners when they are lost. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted between the shoulder blades of the animal and carries a number that is registered to the pet’s owner.
When a lost pet is found by animal control or taken to the county shelter, they are checked for a microchip with a handheld wand which displays the chip number. This number is cross referenced with a database and the pet and owner can quickly be reunited. Sheriff Schaffer added, “Unlike a collar or tag, the microchip is a permanent method of identification.”
An appointment, proof of county residency and rabies vaccination are required. The cost of the chip is $15. Please call 465-8923 to schedule an appointment.
The Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is located in the Crest Haven complex at 110 Shelter Road in Cape May Court House. The Shelter is open to the public 12 p.m. to -4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The facility is closed on legal holidays.
