Comprehensive Plan

The Cape May County Planning Board's (and Planning Department's) responsibility for creating and implementing a county-wide comprehensive plan is derived from the County Planning Enabling Act of 1935 (C.40:27). This act empowers Counties with the ability to establish planning boards and directs those boards to "…make and adopt a master plan for the physical development of the county." For a copy of the current County Comprehensive Plan, (Click here)

Transportation Planning

Transportation planning is a comprehensive, coordinated and continuing process by which foreseeable transportation needs are analyzed from state, regional and local perspectives. The process involves activities of State, County, and municipal agencies, public authorities, citizens organizations, regional transportation planning agencies, and others and includes social, economic, energy, and environmental considerations. The Planning Department is actively involved in this process and represents the County at the monthly meetings of the Technical Advisory Committee of the South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization. Regular public input regarding transportation issues is sought at all regularly scheduled County Planning Board meetings. For a copy of the current County Transportation Plan, please call the County Planning Department.  Cape May County road maps can be found by using our Interactive Mapping Site (IMS).

Local Assistance Planning

The Planning Department occasionally assists municipal planning boards and other bodies such as Environmental Commissions in their planning efforts. In the past, the Department has assisted local bodies by providing information on such diverse issues as zoning practices, land use trends, population, and the New Jersey State Development and Redevelopment Plan.

Open Space and Farmland Preservation

The Division of Open Space and Farmland Preservation is housed within the Planning Department. Since its inception in 1989, this Division is responsible for the acquisition of over 3,000 acres of farmland and Open Space. The County acquires title in fee simple for open space parcels and acquires the development rights for farmland parcels. For a copy of the Open Space and Recreation Plan, (Click here).

The Indian Trail Swamp Cleanup will take place on Saturday, February 20th from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.  Rain date will be April 3rd.  We will meet at the Indian Trail Swamp Preserve, about a mile west of Home Depot on Indian Trail Road, in Cape May Court House.  Please arrive early and dress for the weather.  Only heavy rain or snow will cancel the event.  Bring work gloves, water, and a snack.  We will provide trash bags and all other essential items (including coffee and donuts).  Following the clean-up, there will be an optional hike through the rare Cape May lowland swamp.  For more information on the Swamp and the event, please visit the Friends of Cape May NWR website at http://www.friendsofcapemayrefuge.org/indian-trail-swamp-cleanups--early-spring-2010.html.
